ATS Resume Format, The Complete 2026 Guide for Indian Job Seekers

We Reviewed 500+ Indian Resumes. 73% Had the Same Problem.#
We reviewed over 500 resumes from Indian freshers last month. Resumes from B.Tech students at VIT, SRM, Amity, IP University, KIIT, you name it. 73% of them had the same problem: they looked great to humans, but ATS software couldn't parse them at all.
Not "slightly wrong." Completely unreadable.
An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) is the software that sits between your resume and the recruiter. When you upload your resume on Naukri, LinkedIn, or a company career page, it hits the ATS first. The software scans it, scores it, and decides whether a human ever sees it.
Every major Indian company uses one, TCS runs Taleo, Infosys uses SuccessFactors, Wipro runs Workday, and most funded startups use Freshteam or Lever. Even government PSUs have adopted these systems now.
According to a Harvard Business Review report, 75% of resumes are auto-rejected by ATS before a human recruiter ever looks at them. Three out of four. That means most of you reading this have probably been rejected by a robot, not a person.
Why 75% of Indian Resumes Get Auto-Rejected#
We uploaded 20 resumes to 3 different ATS systems (Taleo, Workday, iCIMS) and tested what actually breaks. The results were eye-opening.
1. Canva Templates Look Gorgeous. ATS Can't Read 90% of Them.
This is the single biggest killer. Those beautiful two-column Canva templates with icons, graphics, and colourful sidebars? ATS software reads your resume as plain text, top to bottom. Columns confuse it. Text boxes confuse it. Graphics get skipped entirely. In our test, 9 out of 10 Canva-designed resumes had critical parsing failures, names misread, skills placed under education, entire sections missing.
2. Missing Keywords from the Job Description
ATS matches your resume against the job description (JD). If the JD says "React.js" and your resume says "React" or "ReactJS", some systems won't match them. We saw this happen constantly, a candidate had every skill the JD asked for, but spelled them slightly differently. Score: 41/100.
3. Wrong File Format
Many students submit resumes in .docx with complex formatting, or worse, as images or scanned PDFs. ATS needs a text-based PDF or a simple .docx file to read the content properly.
4. Non-Standard Section Headings
ATS looks for standard headings like "Education", "Experience", "Skills", and "Projects". If you use creative headings like "My Journey" or "What I Know", the ATS cannot categorize your information correctly.
5. Important Information in Headers/Footers
Many resume templates place the candidate's name and contact details in the document header. Most ATS systems completely ignore headers and footers, so your name and phone number simply disappear.
ATS Resume Format, Section by Section#
Here is exactly how to structure each section. No fluff, just what works based on what we have seen pass real ATS systems at Indian companies. (If you prefer reading in Hindi, check out our resume kaise banaye guide.)
Contact Information
Do:
- Full name (as it appears on your documents)
- Phone number with country code (+91)
- Professional email (firstname.lastname@gmail.com)
- LinkedIn profile URL (customized, not the default random characters)
- City, State (no full address needed)
Do NOT:
- Put contact info in a header/footer
- Add your photograph (Indian ATS systems do not need it, and it wastes space)
- Include date of birth, father's name, or marital status (outdated practice)
- Use a college email that will expire
Professional Summary (3 Examples for Freshers)
Drop the "Career Objective" section. It's 2026. Nobody reads it.
Instead, write a 2-3 line summary at the top. This is where you front-load your most important keywords naturally.
Example 1, B.Tech Computer Science Fresher:
Recent B.Tech Computer Science graduate from XYZ University with strong foundation in Java, Python, and Data Structures. Completed 3 academic projects including a full-stack web application using React.js and Node.js. Seeking a Software Engineer role to apply problem-solving skills in a challenging environment.
Example 2, MBA Marketing Fresher:
MBA (Marketing) graduate from ABC Business School with hands-on experience in digital marketing through a 6-month internship at a D2C startup. Proficient in Google Analytics, social media marketing, and content strategy. Seeking a Marketing Analyst role.
Example 3, B.Com/BBA Fresher:
B.Com graduate with specialization in Accounting and Finance. Proficient in Tally ERP 9, Advanced Excel (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables), and GST filing. Completed a 3-month internship at a CA firm handling accounts receivable and payable.
Education
List your most recent education first. Include:
- Degree name and specialization
- College/University name
- Year of graduation (or expected graduation)
- CGPA or percentage (include only if above 7.0 CGPA or 65%)
B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering
ABC Institute of Technology, Mumbai, Affiliated to Mumbai University
Graduated: June 2025 | CGPA: 8.2/10
Skills, How to Extract Keywords from the JD
This is where most candidates blow it. They list random skills they vaguely remember from college. Don't do that. Read the job description and match your skills to what they actually ask for.
Here is the process:
- Open the job description
- Highlight every skill, tool, technology, and qualification mentioned
- Check which ones you genuinely have
- List those skills using the exact same words from the JD
Example: If the JD says "Proficient in Microsoft Excel and SQL", write exactly "Microsoft Excel" and "SQL", not "MS Office" and "database management."
Group your skills into categories:
Programming Languages: Java, Python, C++
Web Technologies: HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, React.js, Node.js
Databases: MySQL, MongoDB
Tools: Git, VS Code, Postman, JIRA
Soft Skills: Team Collaboration, Problem Solving, Technical Documentation
Projects, The Most Important Section for Freshers
Hot take: your college project IS experience. A "to-do app" IS a full-stack application. Stop underselling yourself.
If you are a fresher with no work experience, your Projects section is the most important part of your resume. This is where you prove you can actually do the work. (We have a full guide on this, resume for freshers with no experience.)
For each project, include:
- Project name
- Technologies used (this is where ATS picks up keywords)
- 2-3 bullet points describing what you built and the impact
Use this formula for each bullet: Action Verb + What You Did + Technology Used + Result/Impact
Good Example:
E-Commerce Web Application | React.js, Node.js, MongoDB, Stripe API
- Developed a full-stack e-commerce platform with user authentication,
product catalog, and payment integration using React.js and Node.js
- Implemented RESTful APIs handling 500+ product entries with MongoDB
- Deployed on AWS EC2 with 99.5% uptime over 3-month testing period
Bad Example:
Online Shopping Website
- Made a website for buying and selling products
- Used various technologies
Experience / Internships
Even a 1-month internship counts. Format each entry like this:
Software Development Intern | XYZ Technologies, Bangalore
June 2025 – August 2025
- Built automated testing scripts in Python, reducing manual QA time by 40%
- Collaborated with a team of 5 developers using Agile methodology and JIRA
- Fixed 15+ bugs in the production codebase, improving application stability
If you have no internship at all, skip this section entirely, do not leave it blank. Put more emphasis on Projects and Achievements instead.
ATS Resume Format Rules#

Mistake 1: Using Canva or Behance resume templates Fix: Use a plain single-column Word document or Google Docs template.
Mistake 2: Writing "Curriculum Vitae" as the title Fix: Just write your name at the top. ATS does not need a title.
Mistake 3: Adding a skill rating bar (Python: 80%) Fix: ATS cannot read graphic rating bars. Just list the skill name.
Mistake 4: Saving the file as "Resume_final_v3 (2).pdf" Fix: Name it "Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf", clean and professional.
Mistake 5: Listing every technology you have heard of Fix: Only list skills you can confidently speak about in an interview. If you list "Kubernetes" but cannot explain what a container is, it will backfire in the technical round. Badly.
Mistake 6: Writing "Responsible for..." in every bullet Fix: Start with action verbs, Built, Developed, Implemented, Designed, Automated, Improved.
Mistake 7: Not customizing for each job Fix: Adjust your summary and skills section for each JD. Yes, it takes 15 extra minutes. It is worth it.
Mistake 8: Including "References available on request" Fix: Delete this line. Nobody calls references at the resume screening stage.
Mistake 9: Putting everything in one giant paragraph Fix: Use bullet points. Each bullet should be one clear achievement or responsibility.
Mistake 10: Not including LinkedIn profile Fix: Add your LinkedIn URL. Recruiters WILL check it. Make sure your LinkedIn matches your resume.
ATS Resume Format for Naukri vs LinkedIn vs Direct Apply#
Many students ask: "Is there a different format for Naukri, LinkedIn, and company career pages?"
The short answer: No. The same ATS-optimized format works everywhere. But there are small differences in how each platform handles your resume:
| Platform | Format Notes |
|---|---|
| Naukri.com | Parses your uploaded resume to fill profile fields. Upload a .docx for better parsing. Also fill out all Naukri profile fields manually, recruiters search using Naukri's own database. |
| Your LinkedIn profile IS your resume here. But when you "Easy Apply" with a resume attachment, that attachment goes through the company's ATS. Use a PDF. | |
| Company Career Pages | These go directly into the company's ATS (Taleo, Workday, SuccessFactors). Follow every formatting rule strictly. PDF works best here. |
| Internshala | Internshala has its own profile system. Fill it out completely. When attaching a resume, use the same ATS format. |
| Email Applications | Attach a PDF with a clear filename. The recruiter may or may not run it through ATS, but good formatting helps either way. |
Pro tip for Naukri: Update your profile every 2-3 days (even a small edit, change one skill, update your headline). Naukri boosts recently updated profiles in recruiter search results. Sounds silly, but we have seen candidates go from 0 profile views to 15+ per week just by doing this.
FAQ#
What is the best file format for an ATS resume?
A text-based PDF is the safest choice for most ATS systems. Some older ATS (like certain versions of Taleo) prefer .docx. When in doubt, check if the job portal specifies a preference. If it says "PDF or Word", go with PDF.
Can I use colours in an ATS resume?
You can use minimal colour, for example, dark blue for section headings. But avoid colourful backgrounds, gradient effects, or light-coloured text. ATS reads text content, not visual design. If colour makes text harder to parse, it hurts your score.
Is a one-page resume mandatory for freshers?
For freshers with 0-2 years of experience, one page is strongly recommended. Recruiters spend an average of 6-7 seconds scanning a resume. One focused page is better than two pages of filler content. Only go to two pages if you have significant internships, publications, or projects that genuinely add value.
Should I include my photograph on an ATS resume?
No. Most Indian companies do not require a photograph on the resume. Photos take up valuable space, and ATS cannot process images. Some companies even prefer no photos to avoid unconscious bias in hiring.
How often should I update my ATS resume?
Update your resume every time you learn a new skill, complete a project, finish an internship, or earn a certification. Before every job application, customize your summary and skills section to match the specific job description. A generic resume sent to 100 companies will perform worse than a tailored resume sent to 20.
Do all Indian companies use ATS?
Most large companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Accenture, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra) and well-funded startups use ATS. Some smaller companies and local businesses still review resumes manually. But even for manual review, an ATS-formatted resume is clean and easy to read, so you benefit either way.
